Charles Waters
A FOLK ORATORIO
BY J.CLIFFORD

Taibreamh

charles waters
blow wind
tearing down my leaves
thunder roll
my roots shiver not
oh come little boy hide from the rain

rest now
the sun has found its way
shy your fears
my arms shiver not
oh come little boy tell me your name

my name is charles waters I live past the hill
my father would farm but he's seven years ill
the fields have grown tall with the weed and the wild
my home it is broken, one mother one child

rest now
you will soon forget
my thick shade
it will leave you not
oh stay little boy I will stand strong

this field
I have called my home
many years
lonesome as they pass
oh here little boy I've been all along

sleep it has come it is dressed in a black robe
my fears have grown fertile, the night has slowed
a figure stands tall his face white as moon
I am so young, shall my father die so soon

listen
I will tell you this
years have come
to only ease dispair
oh of this little boy I am ashamed

men came
one of them was charged
a thief of bread
they would spair him not
on hung on my branch can I be blamed

a new day
is all that I have left
but I am full
my roots shiver not
oh come little boy hide from the rain

lockshire sound

I am a young sailor who travels the sea
my fever for horizons would not let me be
so I cast of the shore like a load off a steed
a circle of water is all that I need

oh dance all ye, dance all ye water and foam
my bow is a stage for your magic to roam
and run all ye, run all ye thunder and rain
my sails hold the scars but do not hold the pain

I tighten my ropes to the wind that has blowed
giving the rudder the strength that is owed
and I travel northeast to the land I was born
hoping I will not receive her forlorn

I courted a maiden not one year it's been
she wants to be married her dowry to spend
a family of boys and a girl she would say
would satisfy hungers that youth has delayed

"but the mist of the harbour is solid as stone
if you don't return from your journeys alone
I'll spend every evening on lockshire sound
gazing for sails that are now homeward bound"

I fear that my absence is longer than said
almost a year since I've slept in my bed
as I'm approaching lockshire sound
I hope that my maiden soon will be found

oh excuse me young lady do you know of she
for I was away riding waves of the sea
"yes I do know of the lady you speak
I attended her wedding with flowers last week"

oh save your tongue lady you can not be true
for I have returned as I said I would do
but time does erode some firmness of soil
a sapling will grow, if not it will toil

her hunger for marriage a family indeed
was true to her word, was true to her need
but I was just written in sand for the say
let lockshiresound wash it away

forget my loss
Let the sun gather round my shoulders
and I will forget my loss
for I had a child
who's skin was soft as summer
as I lais her down for sleep
but she said "father don't leave me
my dreams have turned to black"

Listen here my only daughter slowly
and you will sleep in peace
for I have strong hands
and a cautious I for danger
so you can sleep in peace
but she said "father don't leave me
my skin has turned to white"

Listen here my only daughter closely
and you will sleep in peace
for my house is warm
from the winds that blow so coldly
so you can sleep in peace
but she said "father stay closely
my heart is cold like stone"

my daughter sleeps but she will not be dreaming
her breathing grows so weak
my heart tears the skin
a bird has lost it's feathers
my hands they grow so weak
the moon rises over my farmland
but I can't look fondly on

Let the earth gather round my shoulders
and I will forget my loss
for I had a child
who's skin was soft as summer
as I laid her down for sleep

leave behind it all
Dear lady Suzan close your waking eyes
we have got to get some sleep
for the dew is on my shoulder
and my dreams are now knee deep
the sun will rise bringing down the season for the day
but you've closed your eyes and the night will be on it's way

There's a long road out in front of me
I've been traveling it all day
and these mountains cradle humanity
and there rocking my youth away
and the moon grows full like it's eating up the sky

chorus
Her eyes her quiet and her body is still
my mind is scratching with a moment to kill
and the day will rise and the night will fall
and I leave behind it all

The summer has turned cold
mothers baby has turned old
counting the days, counting the miles,
counting my memories
the summer has turned cold

There's a letter in my pocket
there's a parting in my mind
and the words are carefully chosen
and equally hard to find
the earth spins round like a child who loves the game
but she's thirsty not so come in get out of the rain

the sun
there's a man holding his hands in his lap
afternoon skin spilling sweat as a tree spills its sap
bordering peacefullness, bordering charm
leaving his wife she's the muscle that's in his arm
meditate softly his bread for the day
tragedy driving his words someplace far away

chorus
letting the wind blow the ashes to ash
pulling the window and let the wind blow through the sash
tuck away clothing and dresses once worn
tragedy bleeds like the sun no more

there's a man loving his anger like a child
the life of his daughter has yet to be reconciled
now his own fever, his passions anew
serving him well as a soil to sow gardens through
this is the means to which children leave home
it is the same for the lonely to be alone

chorus

time has passed quickly as a river overflowed
the sun has come 'round again, light for the earth bestowed
cursing it softly he asked not for this
he would give sunshine for the warmth of his daughter's kiss
but it is constant it always returns
giving off light 'til his skin and his eyes they burn

suddenly awakened with fear in my chest
I have been dreaming with thoughts that plant seeds of unrest
this the man that self pity has bore
tragedy bleeds like the sun no more

chorus
