Verdi’s blockbuster tells the passionate story of two doomed lovers caught in the sticky web of 1840s Parisian society. The wild courtesan Violetta finds true love with the youthful and innocent Alfredo, but she is forced to abandon him for the sake of his family name. Their elaborate celebrations and extravagant pleasures only heighten the pathos of tragedy. Verdi masterfully enthralls his audience with the romantic motto that true love must triumph over all, regardless of the social customs of the day.
